Good manufacturing starts before the machine starts cutting

We don’t just manufacture the drawing. We look at how to manufacture the part.

Understand the part in context

Understanding the application can reveal manufacturing work that adds cost without helping the component do its job. Our engineering background helps us ask those questions before the process is fixed.

A dimension or feature can look necessary on a drawing but have more flexibility within the actual assembly. Knowing how a part locates, connects or interacts with other components helps us understand which requirements matter most.

An assembly model, application explanation or discussion of the surrounding equipment can be useful alongside the individual part drawing.

Look at the decisions that drive cost

  • Feature placement and access for machining
  • Tolerances that may be tighter than the application needs
  • Extra setups and machining operations
  • Difficult internal geometry
  • Material and process choices
  • Workholding and fixture design
  • Opportunities to use turning, additive manufacturing or another appropriate process

A practical example

An aftermarket automotive customer had designed a part that would work, but some features required an additional machining operation. By understanding how the part was used, Holden identified that those features could move to another side without affecting function.

That change eliminated an operation and reduced production cost.

The aim is to simplify manufacturing while keeping the component’s function intact.

Think beyond the first run

The first order is also an opportunity to understand how the process could develop. Dedicated fixtures, simpler setups and better workholding can make repeat work more efficient. Where quantities justify it, automation can become the next step.

Engineering tied to manufacturing

We welcome collaboration on parts intended for production, including design review and reverse-engineering needs. Share the manufacturing goal, quantity and available project information so the engineering work can be considered in context.
